School Streamliners

Description

Grand Trunk Western U-4a & b - Jock: Totally not because of Vinnie. When I first saw one of these engines, I thought they looked kinda sport-like. I mean, they're the only streamlined steamers I've seen pulling freight without any alteration to the way they were actually built. Maybe that's why Vinnie himself was entered for a contest of strength and not speed.

Milwaukee Road Class A - Sprinter: Used for streamliners on a relatively short distance (seriously, Chicago to Milwaukee is short compared to the routes of the Broadway Limited, the South Wind, the Shasta Daylight, the Super Chief, etc). Plus, these came close to beating the world speed record, and they're just Atlantics!

Union Pacific 49er Mountain-type - Track Star: Unusually, Union Pacific's 49er train had two streamlined engine operating it. The section between San Fransisco and Ogden was relatively flat and handled by a Pacific. But the section between Chicago and Ogden was very graded, requiring the use of a Mountain instead. Also, did I mention the 49er used the same route as the City of San Fransisco? The same train that needed an A-B-B set of E-units or PAs?

Southern Pacific GS-5 - Tomboy: Probably the ironic choice to put here since they were actually smoother and a bit faster than the GS-4s. But in all honesty, the GS engines actually look pretty good without the skirting. Why the sour face with the skirting on this GS-5? Because a lot of the girls i hang out with are tomboys and don't like dresses. Yes, they exist.

Norfolk & Western J class - Queen Bee/Cheerleader: The flagship locos of the N&W, as well as for steam in their twilight years and an icon in railroad preservation today. Could it be any more fitting? Stylish, powerful, and popular, these engine definitely fit these titles.

Pennsylvania T1 - Nerds: I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The T1s are the most underrated class of streamliner ever built. They're sensitive, and had a lot of potential. They were just introduced a bit too late, but then again, so were most steamers in the 40s. Not to mention they're handrails make they look like they had retainers. Meow :3

There were a few others I could add here, but I just didn't feel like drawing them.

General Electric STEL - Foreign Exchange: Say want you want about Bulleid's designs. These steamers looked like diesels.

New York Central J3a - Student Government President: Am I the only one who thinks of business whenever the NYC's paint scheme comes up. The Cigar Band herald doesn't really help there...

New Haven I5 - Bad Boy: Don't get me wrong, I actually like these engines, despite being bulletnosed. But with that black paint and glossy shine...these were Greasers before it was cool.

What would the Chicago and North Western E-4 be? Or the Santa Fe Blue Goose?
